Questions to ask your Tajweed tutor

The most useful questions to ask your Tajweed tutor connect a correction to something you can hear, attempt and review. Learning a rule’s name is helpful, but fluent Quran recitation also requires guided listening and practice. Bring a short example from your lesson so your teacher can explain exactly what to change. This guide helps you leave class with a manageable next step rather than a long list of unfamiliar terms.

Which correction should I prioritise this week?

Ask the tutor to choose the most important issue for your current level. A beginner may need help distinguishing letter sounds before working on several detailed rules together. Ask which example shows the issue most clearly and how you will know when the correction is improving. A narrow focus makes your home practice more purposeful and helps the teacher assess progress at the next lesson.

Can you demonstrate the sound and listen to my attempt?

Request a slow demonstration followed by an opportunity to repeat. Ask what you should listen for and whether the difference concerns the letter’s articulation, a characteristic of the sound or the way it connects to surrounding letters. Written descriptions can support this process, but they do not replace a qualified teacher hearing your recitation. Avoid relying on English spellings to reproduce Arabic sounds accurately.

Where does this rule apply in the passage?

When studying topics such as Noon Sakinah, Tanween, Madd or Qalqalah, ask your teacher to point to the relevant example in the text. Then ask for a second example that looks similar but needs a different treatment. This helps you connect a rule with actual reading instead of memorising a definition in isolation. Follow the reading tradition and level of explanation your tutor is teaching.

How should I practise between lessons?

Ask for a precise passage and a realistic practice method. Should you read a line slowly, listen to a teacher-approved model first, or repeat a corrected phrase before continuing? Clarify what to do when you cannot remember the correction. Keep uncertain examples in a notebook and bring them back. Do not increase speed or add new material simply to make the practice feel more advanced.

How should I handle stopping and starting?

Pausing and restarting deserve guided attention. Ask the teacher where to stop in your assigned passage and how to resume if you run out of breath or lose your place. Avoid treating a general article as a complete explanation of Waqf and Ibtida. The right guidance depends on the passage and your stage of study, so use your own reading example during the lesson.

What does progress look like for my level?

Agree on a small, observable goal: a more consistent sound, fewer hesitations in a familiar passage or a correction you can apply without repeated reminders. Ask when to review the same passage again. Progress is not only the number of pages completed. Accurate, steady reading with awareness of corrections can be a more useful sign that the current stage is becoming secure.

A short checklist for your next lesson

Bring the assigned text, the exact word or line that caused difficulty, your teacher’s previous correction and one clear question. End the lesson by explaining the practice task back to the tutor. If you cannot describe what to do, ask for clarification before leaving. This simple habit makes online Tajweed classes easier to follow and keeps your practice connected to qualified instruction.
